Welcome to Burning Down the House
Launch day for a new newsletter covering Canada's Housing Crisis.
“You may find yourself in a Beautiful House” - Once in a Lifetime, The Talking Heads.
For a growing number of Canadians, David Byrne’s fantasy is becoming increasingly out of reach.
Despite falling prices, the cost of owning a home is growing due to rising mortgage rates; the cost of rent is soaring in metro regions across the country as vacancies dwindle; waitlists for provincial social housing are growing longer; and municipal emergency shelter systems are turning away people due to overcapacity leading to homelessness.
It’s clear that housing in Canada is a growing crisis, and that our politicians, from the local to the federal level, are unable, or simply unwilling, to competently address the issue. What is less clear is why the crisis is happening.
Burning Down the House aims to provide a clear and insightful overview of what is causing the housing crisis, who is benefitting, and the solutions that can get us out of this mess.
Why subscribe to Burning Down the House?
Housing policy can often be complex and esoteric, as a result, many proposed policies to address the crisis are regularly misrepresented and misunderstood.
By creating explainers that critically analyze the most pressing problems and highlighting media and activists providing solutions this newsletter will keep you up-to-date and well-informed on Canada’s Housing Crisis.
What to expect after subscribing?
On Tuesdays, you can expect a weekly round-up of housing-related news.
On Thursdays, you can expect an explainer to provide an analysis of a specific issue, policy, and/or person affecting housing.
You won’t have to worry about missing anything. Every new edition of the newsletter goes directly to your inbox.
